How to fix a leaning tree | Cleveland Tree Removal Company

Do I need to hire a Cleveland Tree removal company? Leaning is a common issue in younger trees that are too weak to support themselves. For young trees, there is an easy fix. New saplings and thinly-stemmed trees are also susceptible to leaning. Also, take into account strong Cleveland lakefront winds that can bend or even uproot these types of trees that are unshielded by surrounding landscaping. Older trees, however, are another issue altogether and may require professional care to ensure proper handling.

If you have a young tree that is leaning, the best way to fix the tilt is by staking the tree. You should use two or three metal or wooden stakes per tree. Follow these steps to learn how to stake your trees:

  • Find the spot on the tree trunk where it feels like there is the most bend. This looks like the same point where you notice the start of the tree lean. It will most likely be somewhere around the 5-foot mark.
  • Hammer the two stakes into the ground on the opposite sides of the tree trunk — about a foot and a half away from the trunk. Optimally, it should be positioned upwind of the tree trunk. Each stake should stick out of the ground at the same height at the leaning point. If you think you need a third stake, place that one on the open side of the tree.
  • Attach the stakes to the tree trunk using a soft material like tree staking straps or canvas straps. Allow for a little slack in the attachments to leave room for a natural amount of swaying. Do not use wire or rope for this step. These materials will injure your tree.

When you stake a tree, remember that it is only for temporary support. By staking a tree you are helping the tree establish its root system. Once the tree has grown out of its growing season and its roots are firmly grounded, the tree will no longer need the stakes.

As for older trees, if there is a significant amount of tilt, there is not much that can be done. Usually the tree is leaning due to an imbalance in the branches or as a result of poor health. In this case, you should have your tree removed to reduce potential safety hazards near your Cleveland area home.
