Will my Cleveland Heights Tree Bloom on Time?

Tree care advice from a Cleveland Heights Tree CompanyCleveland Heights Tree Company: As we have witnessed here in the neighborhood, the weather can be quite unpredictable. Just the other day it was winter cold, with a rain/snow mix, then it cleared up after about 20 minutes to reveal a very nice, warm sunny day. Of course later that day it was again very cold and windy. These quick changes in temperatures are confusing for trees and they cannot keep up with the constant quick changes of adjustment.

Trees are “smart” in that they can sense the right time to start regrowth in the spring. This is based upon measurements of duration of sunlight during the day and temperature detection. When the time is right, your trees will know to bloom. Otherwise, they will protect themselves by waiting until the time comes.

Measuring hours of daylight

Winter comes with long and dark nights and is a time of sleep where there is no growth. Once the nights start to become shorter and the hours of daytime become longer come spring, a tree will know that it is time to awaken from its dormancy and start new growth.

Changing temperatures

Our experts at VanCuren can help you with this next one: calculating the GDD, or the “growing degree days”. With this number you can find out a rough estimate of a window in which your tree will start and stop growing for the year. All trees have a specific base temperature to be reached before it will initiate the growth cycle – find this temperature or ask a tree specialist for help. Next, find the average temperature over the course of the current year’s spring season then subtract the base temperature found in the first part. If you are curious about what exactly the GDD means for your trees, you can ask our VanCuren team.

Every tree is different

Remember no two trees are exactly the same. So if you look out your window at your neighbor’s yard to find all of their trees blooming or budding, there is no need to worry. As long as your trees are in good health your trees are not necessarily “behind” on their bloom time, just be patient. Your tree’s DNA may be telling it to hold off to protect against potential late frost, like the snow shower we had the other day.
